Gee, I’m Hungry!… When’s Lunch?
(By: Pat Kiely)

There is no lunch today.  You aren’t scheduled for one.  To some this may seem like a nightmare, but for others it is a reality.

Many kids who participate in band or chorus are not scheduled for lunch on days they have band or chorus.  How can this be solved?  For some, that means no electives.  Others, like me, wind up eating during class and by the end of the day I am usually cranky from the lack of a “lunch break”.

Are we punishing kids who take band and chorus?  Why are the only electives offered in the school taking place during high school lunch time?  The problem started with block scheduling.  Two half-hour long lunch periods, (70 minutes of time including ten minute “intermission”), have become four twenty-minute lunch periods.  I don’t mind loss of time during my meal, but I do mind not having a lunch period at all.  Back before block scheduling, there were 40 minutes of band (or chorus), but you still had a half-hour afterwards to eat.  The only people who had trouble with band (or chorus) and lunch were people in Course 1B Math.  Often, they stopped doing band.  But there weren’t the problems there are today.  A new schedule needs to be considered to insure that all kids have a lunch, including those taking band or chorus.
